Durante su residencia el compositor trabajará en una nueva obra para voces y ensamble ademas de ensayar con el Ensamble 3 para el estreno de su obra Into its own shadow el día 29 de junio de 2012.
Michael Matthews studied composition with Larry Austin, and is professor of composition at the University of Manitoba. In June 2011 Matthews’ work Six Poems of Novica Tadić received its Mexican premiere at the Foro Internacional in Mexico City Also in June the Penderecki String Quartet gave the world premiere of String Quartet No. 4. Currently he is writing a work for Trio ’86 and for organist Alexandra Fol. He worked recently as an invited artist at the Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras in Morelia.
Inspired by the worlds of nature and literature, Matthews creates music that compels the listener to step beyond the everyday to dwell for a while in images of paradox, to consider the ever-changing tapestry of life. Matthews’ music has been performed in countries around the world. He has been the recipient of numerous commissions and awards, including a Rockefeller Foundation residency at the Bellagio Center in Italy and a scholarship to the Composition and Computer Music Seminar of the Bartók Festival in Szombathely, Hungary. Matthews is a conductor and a founder and artistic director of the GroundSwell new music series. From 2002-2004 he was Composer-in-Residence with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.
