The composition Program at SSMF offers two tracks for program participation

 

Composition Track

 

Students selected to study composition at Sewanee will have multiple opportunities to have their music performed, workshopped and coached during the festival. Students will enjoy weekly lessons and seminar with program coordinator Jorge Variego and have ample time to study, compose and collaborate with fellow students and faculty members. The program is capped at four student composers in the composition track, in order to allow ample time for reading sessions, rehearsals, and performances. Program highlights include:

  • Reading session with the Sewanee Symphony
  • Chamber music performances on the student chamber music series
  • Master classes in contemporary composition and performance techniques with selected festival faculty
  • Composition studio recital
  • Private lessons
  • Group seminar

Audition requirements

  • Composition applicants should submit scores of  PDF ’s two contrasting works written for solo, chamber or large ensemble ( orchestra, chamber orchestra or wind band). Recordings or midi realizations are not required but encouraged. In addition, two letters of recommendation are required. 
Supplemental Study in Composition

Instrumental festival participants may register for composition seminar and lessons for an additional fee.  Students studying composition in this format will have the opportunity to attend the composition seminar, weekly private lessons, and compose for the seminar-workshop ensemble.

Overview:

The FETA Prize in Sound Art was established in 2013 to promote a broad range of contemporary American sound and installation arts.  Artists working within the sonic arts such as sound installation, sound sculpture, sound poetry, soundscape, robotics, net art and similar may submit one work each for consideration. The prize is open to any individual of any age who is a permanent resident or citizen of any North, Central and South American country. All submissions must be anonymous. The prize will include $1,000 USD, feature spread on the FETA website and presentation of the wining work at the Emerson Dorsch Gallery in Miami, FL*.

Judging Procedure:

A committee of three preliminary judges selects 5 finalists. The recommendations are forwarded to the main judge who selects a single winner. The finalists and winner are announced.

*The work will be presented for 2 continuous weeks in 2019, given that such presentation is realistic. Exact dates will be decided in tandem with the gallery. The winner will be responsible for shipping the work to Miami and the gallery will ship the work back.

 

With the support of Foundation of Emerging Technologies and Arts, Emerson Dorsch Gallery, Harold Golen Gallery and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

WOCMAT 2018

WOCMAT, an international conference, has been developing for 14 years and has been focusing on promoting international exchanges in the fields of computer music and audio technology in order to achieve the academic goal of activating music and audio across multiple fields. WOCMAT 2018 is scheduled to be held on December 7th and December 8th, 2018 at National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. The seminar will hold two keynote lectures, four special lectures and four technical concerts.

The main theme of the conference is "Trialogue among Music, Soundscape and Technology". The topics of call for paper will include innovative interactive technology, soundscape research, computer music and audio technology; The categories of call for music will include computer-related music and soundscape composition. The selected papers and musical works will be presented at the conference.

The Phil Winsor computer music competition will be also held during the conference. The Winning works concerts of 2018 Petites Formes Acousmatic Composition Competition co-organized by France, Taiwan and Japan will be an extended activity of WOCMAT2018 conference.

WOCMAT 2018 warmly invites paper and music submissions.

Swiss Contemporary Music Festival Forum Wallis announces the 1. Forum Wallis Academy for Composers & Composition Students FoWACS 2019, June 2-10 at Schloss Leuk, Valais, Switzerland. Within the Academy, works for small and medium-sized chamber music ensembles will be analyzed, rehearsed and performed in an exemplary and practice-oriented manner. The tutors are internationally renowned composers, conductors and musicians such as Beat Furrer, Stefano Gervasoni, Caspar Johannes Walter, Christophe Schiess, Panayiotis Kokoras, Erik Oña, Zafraan Ensemble Berlin, Manuel Mengis, Hans-Peter Pfammatter, UMS ´n JIP and many more. Submission deadline: 15.1.2019. A jury consisting of 2 members of the IGNM-VS board and Erik Oña (conductor) selects a maximum of 10 participants by 1.3.2019. No registration fee.
